Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

This isn't the best Mexican food you can find. So why do I give it 5 stars? Because it offers a unique combination of the following: - Tasty - Great selection for both vegetarian and meat-eaters - Affordable - Great house-made hot sauce - Full bar and cheap beer (not a huge selection but they have Summit) - Free parking - Great service (waitress knew her stuff and made great recommendations) - Restaurant ambiance great for lingering Could I go to a taqueria around town for better food, yes. But would there be parking? Could I order a 24 oz beer (for 6 bucks)? Will I want to hang around for a couple hours to visit with friends? The list goes on. Now, there are times when a truly great taco is more important to me than parking, beer, expense, or ambiance. I will, of course, still be frequenting my local taquerias. But for a comfortable, long, full-service happy hour/dinner with friends in the neighborhood, Los Ocampo was an A+ experience. Also, the guacamole was great.

After sitting in the car for 15 minutes debating amongst my sister & friend what should we eat for dinner we went back & forth between "Chinese? No, something different! Famous Dave's?!"...silence. I mentioned I wanted to eat outside since it was so nice so the debate continued with places with patios. Shout out after shout out. "Mexican?!" "Sounds bomb!" My sister said. Ok, fast forward to MY decision to dine at Los Ocampos because I already knew how much I love Chile rellenos. The host greets us immediately & without knowing they have a patio! Yippee! sat outside. The sun just beaming (& burning). You won't see many if any of my reviews with alcoholic drinks or beers. I'm not a drinker, but my sister & friend were wanting a margarita. I'm not a big fan of tequila so I decided for a daiquiri (rum). As adorable and endearing as our waitress was we didn't receive any of the correct drink orders. Instead 3 strawberry blended regular margaritas with tequila. Bah! I've been a waitress for 10 years and my sister is a bartender so nah we aren't really into complaining much. Food. We ordered ALOT. Sampler platter, tostadas, green enchiladas, spicy tacos & my favorite Chile rellenos. The flautas were way over cooked & ultra thin rolls. The chicken in the enchiladas were stick to the back of your throat dry. I didn't receive my rellenos so I had to reorder them & I wish I hadnt. I'm guessing because my waitress felt bad for forgetting; it was rushed because it was extremely greasy & nearly inedible. I was more disappointed that I decided to choose this restaurant for my ladies than the experience with the grub. I really love the smaller version of this place on on Arcade in St Paul. I might stick to my hole-in-walls. All in all no gain no loss except for 80 bucks we spent!

Food is bland. I hear they have great drink specials but honestly there are many better Mexican food joints in the area.

One of my favorite Mexican spots in the Twin Cities metro. Super good! Never had bad service & have been multiple times. Tacos are delicious & authentic. Salsa very good & the flautas are the best! Bomb. Get yo a$$ here & enjoy!

I have been a patron of this restaurant since opening. On one occasion, the hostess insulted myself and my friend implying we were a gay couple, and that I "looked pretty good for a guy as old" as I am, and I received a lukewarm apology from management for my complaint. I decided to return a year later, and had good experiences until today I had to wait 15 minutes for a waiter, who indicated he wouldn't charge me for chips n salsa he brought. After eating 8-10, I found a hair in them....not mine. My hair is 1/16" long! He apologised for the wait, the hair, etc, did not return to check on me or I might have ordered another beer. The busboy checked on me, and I requested the bill at that point. The waiter returned with a $27 bill for enchiladas and a beer!?!?! When I went on the website to find a contact number to complain, I got voicemail in Spanish indicating that they didn't have voicemail set up!! Little wonder, as many complaints as they surely must receive.

I originally rated this place 5 stars! The lunch time service is still stellar and the food is still great. It is unfortunate that one bad service experience can really hurt a person's overall opinion of a place but it can, and does. Everything was going swimmingly on our dinner date until bill time came...or didn't come. We sat there, empty tabled, waiting for our bill to pay for like 20+ minutes while the server chatted with her friends at a nearby table. Then upon looking at our bill we not given the happy hour price we were quoted at the start of the meal on our appetizer. I don't mind paying full price, especially for delicious but know your own specials and don't promise a price you can't deliver!

Authentic Mexican Food? Not exactly...but about as close as you get in the Twin Cities. Certainly more authentic and better tasting than Acapulco but not quite as much as El Burrito Mercado. Things I love about this place: 1) Many meat and vegetable options - pick a dish and you can make it your own 2) The spicy mexican chicken is incredible - especially if you request extra spicy (which you have to do for anything you want spicy) 3) The queso blanco is tremendous - it is the primary reason my daughter likes to go here. I order an extra cup so I can combine my portion with some spicy salsa to give it some kick....Muy bien! 4) Alambres - choice of meat with peppers, onion, bacon, ham, mozzarella cheese over a bunch of mini tortillas. Very tasty - but eat fast because it does cool off quickly. I like to get the camerones and add mexican chicken. Yes, it is WAY too much food but it is amazing. 5) Shrimp tacos are outstanding 6) Tamales are good 7) They are always happy to modify any item to make sure it is the way you like it. Things that made me drop a star: 1) Service has been either really good or painfully slow - regardless of how busy it is 2) The last two times I've been there I've had to ask for salsa - even though we ordered queso blanco. What kind of mexican restaurant doesn't bring you, and keep refilling, salsa? 3) Elotes - I LOVE mexican street corn and often make it home on the grill. Here I have ordered it twice - once is was good (but not great) and the other time is was awful - luke warm, corn was mushy. If you're going to serve elotes they should be freshly grilled, fully coated and sprinkled with lots of cotija cheese and chili powder. If not - don't bother. All in all, this is a great place for very tasty mexican fare. I'll definitely put up with a few annoyances to satisfy my cravings for good food!

Good food and for a awesome price. The lunch special comes with soup or salad, your choice meal and soda. Good deal! Service was good and it wasn't crowed, will be coming back to try other stuff on the menu.

I have eaten here many times. About 10 visits now. Pros: Love the Americano Tacos with Roasted Marinated Pork. I tried it once with pork in red sauce=bad idea. (TMI, but my tummy was not the same after I ate it. Took two days to go back to normal.) LOL I also tried the chicken taco, chicken was really plain. Never again. The Roasted Marinated Pork is my go to. I have yet to tried beef/steak meat. Will do that next time. The BF gets the chicken or beef quesadilla with corn instead of flour. He loves the fluffiness of it. I think I prefer the flour. The elotes are ok. It's boiled corn instead of roasted. You can really tell the difference. I have yet to try other dishes, but I love the American tacos... choice of meat and lettuce n sour cream! CON: Service is iffy. Sometimes it's great, but last two times, it was super slow. Took the waitress forever to come get our order, fill out drinks, and bring our check. We did not complain, but I hate when service is bad... but the food is good and it's really close to come. Overall, FOOD is GREAT! Not a fan of the past two visit's service. And it was not busy by any means. Parking lot is good. I like places that have their own lot. Seating is spacious. Also love that! Very kid friendly. Last two times there were balloon artist there.

This is the tastiest most authentic Mexican food in the state. The service is fast and everyone appears to truly enjoy working there. I truly plan to eat here once a week.
(5)Annie P.
Best Mexican Food in the Twin Cities. Great tap beers, can't wait to sit outside and drink some cold Negra on the outdoor patio.
(5)Adam C.
I can only echo what others have said - delicious, authentic, and they truly care about the product they bring to the table. My wife and I often eat here, and have truly enjoyed it each and every time.
(4)Cindy S.
We went there because a friend said it was good. Server was terrible - said it was her 1st day, but really awful. We waited forever for drinks, she never got my 2nd beer - I had to go to the bar after a 15 minute wait for it. Food was pricy, sub-par & not what the menu described at all. When I complained the dish was supposed to be stuffed with beans, and pulled it apart to show the manager the half bean there - she said "see there's a bean!" OMG - I will never go back.

Authentic, authentic, authentic! You won't find most of these foods at the Acapulco restaurant chain (which why anyone would want to go to Acapulco to pretend to eat Mexican food is beyond me). These are the real deal, and from preparation to presentation, everything is spot on. The flavors are complex and everything is fresh. This is the best Mexican food I have EVER had (except while in Mexico). Yes, it's located in the building of an old chain, yet the atmosphere, while a bit too bright for me in the main dining room, is very nice. It's clean and attractive. So don't read this book by it's cover....you'd be missing a classic. We added their guacamole with the chips, and it was excellent. I also requested their spicy green sauce to go with it. Delicious and delightful. I ate way too much. Their red sauce was dinged by another reviewer as being bland. I highly disagree. Although not the best I've ever tasted, it was certainly one of the better ones I've had. Also, another reviewer said it wasn't spicy enough....ours most definitely was. My husband is a heat wimp, while I am on the other end of the spectrum. He, while loving it, suffered a bit to eat it while I was wanting more heat. Usually, that means it's pretty perfect for the general population. I added some of the green sauce, and got the heat cranked way up and was in heaven. For dinner, we shared the Sabores Alambre and the Huarachazo. I really try to avoid gushing when I write a review, so all I will say is "gush, gush, gush, gush" and leave it at that. They were both so well prepared, so complex in their flavors....and bottom line so authentic. It was the most meal "delicioso" I've had in a very long time. If I had any advice for them, they are adding breakfast and including some American entrees on their breakfast menu. I would suggest they capitalize on what they do well and simply stick to their roots....keep it all authentic Mexican. Seeing how many Spanish speaking people who were there at the time we were, assures me that they should carve out this niche to be entirely their own in this Minneapolis market. Our server, while absolutely delightful, did need a couple of reminders, but the food so trumps everything else at Los Ocampo, that 5 stars are necessary, required and ultimately most extremely well earned.

Have you ever tried a place and have almost no feeling or opinion of it? That's Los Ocampo for me. Don't get me wrong, I have been here multiple times to try and get a feel for whats going on here and still.. nothing. I've been scratching my brain trying to think of what I can say about this place and I'm just not really coming up with anything. I can only recall the food I had the last two times I've come here because they were relatively recent and even then I have to really pick my brain. The queso blanco was pretty good but not discernible from any other queso blanco I have had. That's not a bad thing, it just means the flavor was totally expected and not anything exciting. My margarita was good and potent. I don't like the chips here. They taste like paper bag to me and I remember the very first time I came here with my sister there was cheese and a tomato stuck on one of the chips. Flashbacks of shows on Food Network about restaurant reusing the chips left on the tables popped into my head. I certainly hope that wasn't the case here and I won't say it was. I now make it a point to dump salsa on my left over chips before I leave a place, just in case. I could have sneezed on those and no one would know. Just sayin'. The chicken tacos. There was chicken in a taco shell. The chicken was dry but had decent flavor. The taco itself needed oomph. I stole some of my mom's guacamole and slathered it on for some moisture. It helped but even the guac didn't add anything interesting to the taco. My tacos came with a side salad, which I felt was kind of weird. It was the tiniest side salad I have ever had at a restaurant and I actually thought it was kind of funny. That, too, was nothing special. The Huarache with chicken which was pretty much the chicken taco on a fried masa cake instead of a tortilla. I like masa cakes so this was a little more interesting but the chicken was still dry so I assume it's just how it always is. They put radishes on everything which I have never seen before and I personally don't think it added anything to any of the dishes I've had. Huarachazo which is like the more stereotypical Mexican version of the huarache, oddly enough. Sam ordered this with roasted pork and it came with spicy beans, and avocado sour cream and cheese. Normally with pico, but Sam has a deep, deep disdain for pico so it was shunned and left off the plate. It was okay. The bite of roasted pork that I tried tasted a little fatty and despite the pork being a nice rich red color it didn't have any special flavor to it. I generally expect more vibrant flavors and colors from mexican food and the food here is just food. I would come here if I wanted food but I don't think I would come here if I wanted anything festive. I will say, though, that our waitress was very helpful and saved Sam the horror of ordering something that she thought was something else. They definitely know their white folks here. My suggestion: Come here if you're craving food.

Had the fish tacos. I thought they were very good. Had a little bit of sweet heat. I like things spicy so I asked for their salsa which added the missing spice.

At first I avoided this place because a friend told me it was kind of like Acapulco, which I can't stand. I prefer rustic little taco joints or trucks--the food is almost always better than at a sit-down restaurant. But my curiosity won out, and I'm glad I went. The resemblance to Acapulco ends with the bar and table service. Food at Ocampo is WAY better. We started with chips and salsa, and I thought the salsa was little better than ketchup. But when I asked our server if they had something spicier, she brought out a super-hot green/avocado salsa and a super-flavorful orange-colored chili sauce. Both were excellent, and I was a lot happier. My husband ordered the huarachazo with carnitas. Five stars for that! The masa base was crispy and light, and the whole thing was absolutely delicious. I had two tacos al pastor. They were good, but not memorable. Service was friendly and prompt, decor is what you would expect at a Mexican restaurant (colorful serapes, sequined sombreros, and piñatas hanging from the rafters.) The music selection was a little weird--it switched between schmaltzy European classics and mariachi tunes. I still prefer hole-in-the-wall taco joints, but for a sit-down Mexican meal and a wider menu, Ocampos is as good as it gets in the Twin Cities.

I enjoy the food here 4 out of 5 trips. I get food here a few times a month. I would eat here more but it is very pricey. And chips are an extra fee which is abnormal for most local Mexican restaurants. The homemade tortillas for quesadilla's are my favorite. But there is a huge selection and I am trying to expand my food experiences.

We've stopped in for dinner twice before and tonight's visit, our third, may well be the last. It's right in our neighborhood and while we like to patonize local spots, it's up to them to earn continued patronage. The food is mediocre at best -- given the two previous experiences I ordered the steak fajitas. I mean, how tough are those? Plenty tough apparently. The steak was nearly reduced to crispy bits and the veggies charred and mushy to the point where a spoon was required to move them from pan to tortilla. The fixins' -- mostly a pile a shredded lettuce topped with smallish piles of red-hued rice, refried beans, and pico de gallo were uninspired and dull. The guacamole was peppered with too much cheyenne to be a palette cooler. The best thing on the plate was the sour cream! My wife's tortilla concoction - two 13" tortilllas with a razor-thin spreading of red-sauced beef then grilled was kinda gross. I can make something similar and much better tasting with canned goods and my George Foreman grill. The tortillas were sided with three sauces that were various degrees of freakin' hot. The dishes, except for the sopa de mariscoes I had the first time, are loaded with carbs and woefully short on proteins and nunaced flavors. Maybe the tacos, ordered individually, are the thing that gets Los Ocampo its stars. It certainly isn't anything we've had to eat. Or perhaps its the upbeat music, the only thing we agreed that made this experience worthwhile...

I go to this restaurant quite often and I love it the food is delicious and pretty affordable the drinks are also great and the service has always been awesome no complains at all. I would recommend this place to anyone who loves mexican food and great costumer service.
(4)Steve M.
I always get a good solid Mexican meal here, service is always right on. Great Mexican beers on tap in frosty mugs. My usual is taco duros and chorizo queso appetizer.
(4)Daniel A.
Just ok nothing mind blowing. Ask for the spicy green salsa makes life better there.

Located in St. Paul off 94 and White Bear Ave. as well as some "fast food" locations which is where we stopped, the Midtown Global Market. We ordered two tacos, a Pastor (Marinated Roast Pork) and a Chicharron Prensado (Smoked Pork in Red Sauce). More authentic Mexican food around town that is fantastic. Make sure to try this place if you're in the area of one of their locations and if you're in the mood for some AUTHENTIC Mexican food of course.

I was a bit skeptical about eating at a Mexican Restaurant in the Twin Cities. I mean it is easy to be conceited because being a California native we are a bit spoiled with the great variety of Mexican food here. However I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and presentation of the food and the knowledge of the staff. The ambience of the restaurant was nice. The bar was separate from the rest of the restaurant and the television noise from it was at a minimum. I liked the decorations and the seating arrangements. Plenty of space to move around and talk with my group. I ordered a burrito with marinated chicken. It was at a suggestion of the waitress. I really don't mind servers suggesting menu items as long as they accept if I deviate. I didn't deviate on the meat choice and I was impressed. She seemed to be Mexican as well so it is always good having the perspective of someone a culture especially if they are serving you the food of that culture. I heard from my relatives, in a non-serious manner how mild dishes are suggested to the largely caucasian client group. If the only gripe is that they don't serve spicy food unless asked by their guests. I thought it was kind of a silly gripe. They had plenty spicy food when requested. Overall Los Ocampo was the perfect environment to share a meal with my relatives on the last day of being in Minnesota. I will remember the memorable experience for quite some time to come.

I visited Los Ocampo for lunch because it was the nearest place to my hotel that had good reviews here on Yelp. After a recent terrible disappointment with regard to nachos at Bucho's in Bolingbrook, IL., I was hesitant to order nachos at another Mexican restaurant that was new to me... but I'm *so* glad I did! I was not disappointed at all. The nachos served at Los Ocampo are huge in portion and totally delicious! Plenty of food for 2 people to share for lunch. The spicy chicken that I ordered on them was tender and full of flavor, and the chips were sturdy but not too thick and had a great crunch. We lucked out and showed up right at happy hour, so the nachos were $2 off, and the margaritas were only $4! My husband was driving, so he ordered horchata, and he enjoyed it. With tax and tip, we were both able to eat a filling lunch and get out of there for $20! Altogether a win. If I lived in the area, I'd definitely be a regular.

I am warning you now- Do not eat here unless you are willing to never go to Taco Bell, Taco Johns, or any other "taco place" for the rest of your life. The authentic Mexican tacos here are simple, yet amazing. You get your choice of meats, of which I have only tried two, carnitas and asada, both good, but I stick with the Carnitas. Yep, I am boring when it comes to trying new meats...They do have lengua for those of you who enjoy tongue ( I hear its delicious but I won't be trying it any time soon), along with about 15 other choices. Tacos are served with cilantro, radishes, and limes just like they are supposed to be! Other items we have tried include the huarachazo, which is one of my favorites if I am not getting tacos. Ci gets a Carnitas huarachazo every single time! Everything here is amazing except the salsa. The salsa tastes like tomato sauce. Its not spicy at all. We always ask for the light green hot salsa to go along with it. Do it..Just ask for it from the start because you will not like the tasteless, boring salsa. What more can I say that has not already been said. I love this place!! Its open until 2 AM for us night owls and its Super Cheap too. Tacos are only $1.99! This place will make your tummy and your wallet happy!

The old Baker's Square building, just south of I-94 at White Bear Avenue, across from the Target has laid dormant for the past five years. Boarded up, it was an eyesore. My gym is a block from the location and for the past 6 or 7 months, I knew something was coming, but what?? Slowly, contractors were working on the building transforming it into something special. But no signs outside to let me know what was coming. Then one day a clue. A van for Los Ocampo parked in the parking lot. The van was there every day I drove by for a couple weeks. My interest is peaked. Is Los Ocampo opening a restaurant here? Or are they merely using the abandoned lot to store their vehicles from the nearby location on Arcade Street. Then the sign went up and it was confirmed That the fine people at Los Ocampo decided to expand their local empire of authentic Mexican food to the greater eastside of St. Paul. I went in for the first time last night for dinner with Z. Here are my observations. There is a full bar. Good beer selection, all of the Mexican varieties plus 6-7 solid craft's on tap, Newcastle, Sam Adams, Summit, Sierra Nevada. Nothing unique, but much more than you would expect from a Mexican restaurant. They also had 4-5 wine selections and of course Tequila and Margaritas. I got huge mug of Summit for $5. The menu seems to be the same as their other locations with one noted difference. The food is not spicy. I ordered the spiciest meat flavor on the menu and it was more of a tingle than hot. The restaurant was completely full when I was there and unlike their other locations, it seems like most of the clients here were not Latino. This location was made for the 3M crowd nearby and the mostly white residents of Battle Creek. So while its the same menu as the the other locations, they removed nearly all of the heat. If you really like spice in your food, make a special point of telling the server. I'm sure they have it back there, but don't break it out unless you specifically request it. Another difference from the other locations is that you get full wait service, as opposed to ordering from the counter. The outside of the building still looks like a Baker's Square, but the inside has been extensively remodeled and looks pretty nice. They took away the dropped ceiling to reveal the exposed wood beams above. This makes the place look and feel larger and gives it a more urban look. The added some faux limestone walls and turned the old pie counter into a full bar. They removed the old waiters station in the middle of the restaurant, so it is very open. There was a DJ station up in the rafters. The music was at a normal level for a restaurant, but we were eating at 7 on a Wednesday night. Maybe later in the evening it gets a little louder?

I give the food a 5, but lose a star for some hit and miss service. I'm from the Washington State, a town that is highly agricultural and at least a 40% hispanic population in the area. Not to sound aloof, but I have a solid understanding of how Mexican food, from many of the states of Mexico, should taste. Los Ocampo's menu is varietal, their protein choices are varied and delicious, and they've done a great job in covering a lot of bases in dish choices without completely overwhelming you. Their Mexican chicken (spicy) is friggin' amazing. I never try to make these too long, so I won't this time either. What I will say is when it comes to the food this is as close as it gets...and in East St. Paul! I strongly recommend trying Alambres, but ask for the tortillas on the side. You then get to make your own "tacos" if you will. So delicious. The Chile Verde (Carne Puerco) is delicious, just not spicy enough for my taste. Go for some traditional dishes! If you like spicy, be sure and ask for the green salsa- its an avocado salsa with habanero. Heaps of flavor AND kick. The service (waitstaff) is hit and miss. Bartenders are great. No one is rude, but they're not all the most on their game. Everyone is nice. I've had amazing service and I've had service bad enough to let the manager know. But I come back because of the food! The only other place I like as much as this is Pineda in West St. Paul. Enjoy, I know you will!
(4)Rosie C.
Great location, I think it use to be a Boston market? There's normally a good amount of Mexicans here so that says something about how authentic this place is. We tried the chips and salsa, tacos, fajitas and churros for dessert. With the tacos you get at least 10 different options as far as meat goes, seasoning on the meat was just right. Fajitas were so delicious my boyfriend and I were fighting over the leftovers :p Its a clean place, nice atmosphere and the staff is accommodating. Nonetheless, if you're in the area try it! And if you're not, try one of there other locations!

This "Mexican" restaurant puts sprinkle Parmesan cheese on their refried beans. Not for me.
(2)Tom A.
Relaxing environment at the bar when walking in, excellent Mexican cuisine (second to none), warm and welcoming environment with the finest Spanish guitar music quietly in the background, and a professional and thoughtful staff. I'm a very traditional person and Los Ocampo is nothing but the finest restaurant and bar in the entire area. East St.Paul is finally beginning to make sense. Go to Los Ocampo and enjoy the Mexican tradition with great food, perfect staff, and the bartenders know thier stuff. Awesome.
(5)Jodie Z.
Bad experience here with poor service. Food quality was not the best...waited long periods for service and even longer after we finished our meal for the check.. it wasnt real busy either..will go elsewhere for my next Mexican meal.

Los Ocampo is a very welcome addition to an East side that has been pretty much devoid of good Mexican fare (they just opened in late February). Those that are familiar with their other locations will not be disappointed, and those that aren't are in for a treat. This addition to the Ocampo family is certainly the largest and also has a full bar which earns extra points in my book. Menu selections mirror that of their other locations and features a number of menu items you won't find at the more suburban Mexican joints on the East side (e.g., lengua, huarachazo, etc.). Speaking specifically to this location the carnitas, lengua and pastor tacos are all on point and the huarachazo is delicious and I'm sure I'll find plenty more favorites since I'll be back often when needing to escape the office for lunch. Even the afterthought menu items like rice, beans, etc. are all quite good as well. On the subject of lunch, they have a number of choices available for their lunch specials that include drink, rice, beans, soup or salad and entree selection all priced under $10. The complimentary chips are also quite good, though the accompanying salsa is a bit lacking. Portion sizes are also very generous - I've easily gotten two meals out of most entrees. The only nitpicky complaints I can make are the service which can be a bit spotty, but always friendly, and the decor, which still feels a lot like the old Baker's Square this location used to be, though it is still fairly cozy and very clean. Bottom line: very good, reasonably priced Mexican food with a quaint bar if you're looking to just pony up to a pint or two and grab a bite.

Do yourself a favor and go here for breakfast!!!! It's the best!

Finally a legit Mexican place in Saint Paul. Right off the bat, great ambience and service. Excellent complimentary chips and salsa, and prompt entrees. They also have a variety of salsas (green, yellow, red) to choose from which I enjoy. Also I hear that there's great margaritas, but I'll be the verdict of that next time!

Wow, Is all I can say! The food? Phenomenal and fresh. The drinks? Amazing price on their special margarita and great prices all around. What makes it even better, are the people. The staff and the patrons are amazing and super nice people. We planned on getting dinner quick and watching the rest of the Wild game at home, started talking to the bartender and patrons and stayed til after 10. We left very happy, full and having met new friends!

Slightly bland overall, meaning it lacks seasoning. Salad was wilted and brown, limp. Burritos are huge, and make sure you order a seasoned meat with whatever entree you get. Service is slow and you'll find yourself repeating an order or request a couple times before you actually get it. Thus was for lunch, and they weren't remotely close to busy.

Living relatively close, I was happy to see that a business was moving in on the old Baker's Square space. Was a little disappointed that the exterior was revamped more as it still looks basically like a Baker's Square. We had a minor occasion to celebrate and I used it as an excuse to further my quest to visit more local restaurants. This turned out to be a great idea. My food review will be vague as I don't remember the names of what we had and their online menu is pretty sucky. Their actual menu is very good though! We both had strawberry margaritas that were delicious. We could have waited a short while and got them for HH but we wanted them now. The server made a few suggestions based on what we wanted. The gf ordered something and wanted it spicy, he suggested something else and she went with it. Our food arrived quickly, was very inexpensive and was large in quantity. Best of all, it tasted GREAT. There was a live two person mexican band and soccer on LED TVs. Interior had been nicely redone and I completely forgot I was in "Baker's Square." Will be back!

Finally, a Mexican restaurant in MN with some flavor. Started with a margarita and my husband had a Michalada. Both were good. Salsa was a nice starter, but I wasn't too fond of the chips. I had Enchiladas Rancheros (not the one with red or green sauce, but the one that is a little spicier) with the Mexican chicken which was good. My husband liked his burrito bowl with the Mexican chicken. The portions were huge (what's new in MN)...especially for lunch, but we managed to eat it all! Our server was very sweet and accommodating for all the questions we had. Only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because I'm comparing to all the wonderful Mexican restaurants I got used to in Atlanta.

BIG Burrito Bowl! I'd been wanting to try this place since the moment it opened! A couple weeks ago I got a $30 Groupon-esque coupon for the joint and we checked it out on a Friday night. We arrived around 7:30 and were the 3rd in line for a table, but seated very quickly. We were brought waters and our drink order taken very quickly. I had a very delicious margarita made with Cuervo Gold, lemonade and some other delicious ingredients. Dining companion went with an ice tea. We did not order any appetizers, I had a burrito bowl with pork, pico on the side, dining companion had the combo fajitas. Food came rather quickly and I enjoyed another margarita. My burrito bowl consisted of layers - beans (there is a choice of beans, but I forgot to order black beans, so it came with re-fried), pork, cheese, guac, lettuce and sour cream on the side. It was huge and I couldn't stop eating! I liked how it was actually layered and you could mix or not. My dining companion enjoyed his fajitas, which came with rice and beans. I tried his rice - what do they put in it? It was addicting! I full and couldn't stop. There was something crispy, but not dried out that I really enjoyed. We had the coupon, so on a whim, I ordered a churro. It was huge and tasty, but I didn't love it. Wouldn't get it again. Once again, I prefer the churro at CostCo. How come that thing is goo? After the coupon, our total was $9.00. The service was friendly without being overbearing, the food tasty, the atmosphere a little urban and very open, kind of loud like a joint in Mexico. I'm glad we went, I'd go again, to try something else, but not my favorite place out there. Oh, the grilled pepper served with the fajitas practically burned a hole in my dining companion's tongue. It's not funny, but I did laugh.

I remember when this place was a Baker's Square back in the day; I was excited that it had been transformed into something relatively interesting, in this suburban strip of chains at White Bear and 94. The experience, though, was less than stellar. Los Ocampo has a reputation for being authentic Mexican, so I was a little disappointed with the lackluster salsa at the beginning of our meal. I ordered a margarita, and sadly it was one of those blended ones with big freaking chunks of ice. Blended margaritas should NOT have big freaking chunks of ice. I'm just saying. Also, it was extremely tiny for the $8.50 price tag. The menu is extensive, with lots of interesting choices, and a list of meats about a mile long. I picked the chimichanga burrito, based partly on the picture, which looked incredibly delicious, with a huge mound of guacamole next to the burrito. I was really crestfallen when my food arrived with maybe a tablespoon of guacamole... like it was an afterthought. Maybe a little truth in advertising, guys? The meat in my chimichanga (al pastor) was wonderful, and pretty much all of the flavors (except for that salsa) were fairly good. But for good, authentic Mexican food, I'll probably stick with El Tejaban in the future.

One of my favorite parts about visiting Mexican restaurants is the complimentary chips and salsa - unfortunately Los now charges $3 which isn't major but when the chips showed up they were extremely greasy and obviously refried. On to the food, it's decent but nothing spectacular for the prices. I find the price to portion is a bit high for Mexican fare. The highlight of my stop here was the Modelo on tap. Service was just okay... We sat at the bar and received several check slips for each drink ordered... I know that is sometimes how it's done but at a local spot across from suburban target - just let me enjoy my beer and wait for my food. I had higher hopes based on the reviews. Would I go back? Maybe... But definitely not a place I would seek out. I am an Acapulco's girl for life! Better portions and prices. I also love Las Margaritas but that place charges $22 for combination fajitas and also charges for chips and salsa - lame.

I love this place. Great tacos, ice cold beers, excellent service. There's nothing else in this neighborhood even close, and it's promising that this local business is growing into spots previously held by terrible chain Mexican restaurants. The tacos were my go to as they are basically wraps for their wide selection of very good meats and excellent hot sauces, but then I tried the Sincronizadas, which are basically quesadillas filled with the delicious meat of your choice and served with guacamole and salsa. Now I get one of those and a pair of tacos, usually not finishing all of it. The sincronizada keeps and reheats well, though! It pleases my wife and her more midwestern tastes and keeps my kid happy, too: she only wants refried beans and a side of cheese (and guacamole). The servers have always been great, even serving a little stinker kid. I hope they open more St. Paul locations. Ice cold beers and tacos are the perfect happy hour.

I work very near here and frequented this establishment. The food is good. The service is horrible! It is clear that the bad customer service is systemic and management does not seem interested in fixing the problem. We have visited during lunch and have waited for over an hour, but the food had saved it in the past. My last time there was the last straw. A friend and I decided to go after work. When we sat down, we were given menus and no chips. The table next to us got menus, water and chips. After 10 min our waiter came over, I ordered a coke and asked for chips. He left and came back with my coke and took my friend's drink order. He came back with her beer and no chips. Again I asked for chips. He said ok. Then went to watch tv. 5min later I got up and asked him for chips. He said they don't give chips until you order. Ok take my order then! We ordered and got our dinner. Still no chips! Then I asked again for them! Dah! Finally we got them. We would have ordered more drinks or dessert, but we were frustrated with the poor service. I will never go there again. Go to the D-Spot. The atmosphere sucks it's too small and too crowded. But they act like you are the only customer in the world and treat you with kindness and respect.

I've held off writing a review of this place because the food at the other Los Ocampo locations is seriously legit and I was waiting for all the kinks to get worked out at this particular one. I was so excited for this place to open and thought it was going to be spectacular! The food isn't nearly as good as the other two locales nor is it as spicy. As Dan S. mentioned, it seems they've tailored it for the local gringos. And the service is hit or miss. Seriously hit or miss. So why do I go here? Mostly because it has decent food, a bar and is near my house (the last reason might be the winner).

Wow... don't get it. I love mexican food... but not great at all. With 5 people at dinner, here was the experience. 1. My menu was fully of dried food/salsa... kind of gross. . 2. Service very friendly but kind of slow. 3. Ordered the cheese sauce with chips... it was so watered down that it had lost any semblence to cheese or taste. It was runny like water and tasteless for 5 bucks. Fail. 4. Salsa was ok... not my fave. Too runny for my liking... but was ok. 5. Food... HUGE portions... and food ranged from excellent to poor depending on what was ordered. The chicken tinga chimi had very little chicken and mostly onions... this was the poor. One person said best ever, three said "good" and one said terrible- all ordering diff items. The dirty menu alone is a deal breaker for me... but if you do decide to go... my advice is go early while the food is fresh. We went later in the evening, which is prob why the runny cheese, salsa and chickenless chimi... however that to me is a sign of a place that doesn't take a lot of pride or ownership in what they are serving. Los Ocampo... No mas para mi.
(2)Greg B.
My favorite Mexican restaurant in town. Family owned and authentic. We often eat here later in the evening, service is always fast and the food is consistently good. They have Modelo Especial (my favorite), Modelo Negra, and Dos Equis on tap in addition to domestic choices. Recommendations: The pastor (marinated roasted pork) is out of sight. My favorite items are the sincronizadas (thick meat and cheese in a quesadilla) and the chimichangas (plate size).
(5)Jessie S.
Los Ocampo rocks my socks. If I could eat one cuisine for the rest of my life it would have to be Mexican and Los Ocampo is legit. The Alambres Sabores is my absolute favorite; it's a combination of chorizo, chicken, bacon, ham, steak and fajita vegetables covered in melted cheese. It's supposed to be served on top of soft corn tortillas but I prefer flour so they serve the tortillas on the side. It's seriously everything that is delicious in the world. I've also had the Alambre Campechano but it's not as good. The burrito is quickly becoming my go-to comfort food. It's literally the size of my head and I've yet to finish one in a single sitting. I order mine with Mexican style chicken, black beans and no pico de gallo, mmmmmmmmmm. The majority of the menu items allow you to choose your protein and there is a flap on the left side of the menu that details your options. The only things I've ever ordered that disappointed me in any way was the Elote (corn on the cob covered in mayonnaise and Mexican cheese) which is normally delicious but I happened to order it late in the day once and the corn was soggy so it just made the whole dish unpleasant. It has quickly become my go-to Mexican place. Best of all they have a parking lot and are open until 2:00! Holla!
(5)Sean M.
Holy guacamole this place is the cats ass. The burritos are huge and delicious, the fish tacos are amazing, the guac is phenomenal. Group of eight, everyone got different stuff, everyone oohed and ahhed
(5)Emily O.
YUM! I have never been to a Los Ocampo restaurant & I was thoroughly impressed. Authentic Mexican food w/ a very large menu: taquitos, tacos, fajitas, burritos, salads, sandwiches (the Torta Cubana looks dangerously good), enchiladas, huarache, quesedillas, you name it, they have it along with a large variety of Mexi-style prepared meats (red sauce pork to name one of the best). & to top it off, the salsa & sauce variety is extensive for those condo-loving patrons They also have a late night happy hour w/ great prices. Chips & salsa & you can't go wrong. Try the queso & chorizo- a little kick, but a great appetizer to share. Try it. Sit down, order a beer or a margarita, check out the menu, & be prepared to wow your spicy side :)

OMG our favorite Mexican restaurant in Minnesota heck the midwest! The food is authentic! So good, will make you want to slap your abuelita!

Came into town for a visit with the family. We all decided to come here for lunch. I understand there were 24 guests with me, but getting the orders correct shouldn't have to be that hard. I ordered the Los Ocamp "famous" burrito with no bean, with pico de gallo and with steak with a bowl of green chili as an appetizer. Everyone's order came out right except for mine. I got the opposite of what I didn't ask for, with beans and no chili or pico de gallo. The burrito was not great, I could have gone to chipotle and gotten a way better burrito than having to deal with this. I shouldn't have to tell the waitress to do her job right. Overall the typical mexican restaurant that can be found anywhere. The menu was nothing special, everything I had seen or tasted before. Menu was priced for what it's not worth. Never returning to this location, ever.

Order the "Perfect Margarita" and I will guarantee you will moan. It is that good. My husband and I have been here many times and the food is always top notch. You can pretty much order anything with Pastor (marinated pork) and it will be wonderful. I tend to go for the more authentic menu items and steer away from Mex/Amer food. My husband has had the Camarones a la Diabla and it was tasty with a nice kick. The salsa is pretty mild but you can order hot sauce. It is free and they will bring you as much as you want. I really like the HUARACHAZO. We have ordered a plate of tacos on more than one occasion tasting a variety of their meats. The spicy chicken, pastor and lengua are our favorites. You want good, authentic Mexican food you have to try Los Ocampo. PS-They often show pay per view fights and have dancing on Sat nights.
(5)Tony R.
Food is pretty good, but you are better off going to the Fast food version on Arcade Ave, but forget about sitting at the bar at the Restaurant and getting any kind of service if your not a regular. The barkeep is more worried about his chatting with his buddies, than attending to other customers. Seems that way every time, but its the food that brings me back when I am on that side of town.

You may know Los Ocampos as an order-at-the-counter restaurant at a few other locations. This is their first sit down restaurant. The decor is like a mini-vacation. It's so bright and colorful. No hint of the former Bakers' Square remains. This restaurant is extremely family friendly. Nick Jr was playing on the tv, which insulted my 8 year old's maturity (but she still watched it). I think this family friendliness kept the little ones better occupied, so there was no crying. We were there for dinner. Service was about as friendly as it gets. Prices are ok. Most entrees are around $8. You can certainly just get tacos for $4 if you want. I ordered a pork/hominy soup which was delicious, and my daughter said the quesadilla and foot long churro were yummy. There was live music! A duo playing the marimba & guitar. Nice! The only thing I'd change is their salsa. It's too bland. On the other hand, the hot sauce that came with my soup was beyond scorching! LOL Maybe I should've mixed the two.
(5)Mark A.
My wife, my toddler son and infant daughter and me all headed over to the new location off Suburban which is just a few miles from our house. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect because our previous occasions with Ocampos came mostly from the Mid Town Global Market but all of us were pleasantly surprised. I had a lengua super burrito which was really delicious even my 2 year old thought it was good. We are happy this location opened! We will be back!

Anyone with negative reviews of this place must have caught them on a bad night because my whole dinning experience tonight was awesome. Mexican Rancheras steak enchilidas were da bomb, it was busy tonight but our food was out to us fast and hot and the server was good at refilling drinks and I liked some of the more spicy salsas they gave us on the little sampler platter of sauces. This place is close to where I live so I will be back for more deliciousness probably some time soon but next time with my kid on a friday or saturday as they have a person who makes cool things out of balloons going around to every table with kids so definetly kid friendly here. The food rocked.
(5)M L.
A favorite place, couple times a month. Great Mex food, including many items i dont care to try. Patio with music on weekends. Always busy, but never have had to wait. Was a bakers sq so has a nice sunny room with booths. Recommend the sizzling fajitas, happy hr drink specials. The dreamboat who takes me out to eat always opts for here, always gets the los ocompo burrito - but he is obviously not too adventurous with food. Always had good servers.
(4)Nicholas L.
note that this is a COMPLETELY different experience from the other Los Ocampo. decent, homey mexican food... in a bar atmosphere. Extremely generous with their happy hour, and they have nice frosty large mugs of beer (serving EPA on tap no less). Also - their spiciness scale on the wings... goes up pretty respectably. Thank Jesus for our large frosty beers. (Jesus was our waiter)
(4)Ann T.
We love their food but were let down on Saturday May 5. Went there at 11:30 were seated but no one came to our table. Two couples that came in after us got drinks & appetizer while we waited. There were only nine tables filled & they were not busy. There was no excuse. We left I guess they did not care if they lost a customer or not.

This is hands-down the best Mexican restaurant that I have ever eaten in. As a vegetarian, I particularly enjoyed their vegetarian options to sub in for the meat - pumpkin flower, corn mushroom, and lots of other choices. I had the tlacoyo, which was absolutely delicious. I also thought their salsa was very good.
(5)Matt M.
They have been open 2 weeks and I will be surprised if they make it another 2 , I asked for water with a lime the waitress brings me ice water I ask for a lime she takes the galas of ice water and brings back a glass of water with no ice or lime it took 3 attempts to get that almost rite I got a lemon the food was brought out rite but it took forever to get our order taken and for our food to come the food tasted ok but I have had better the music was so loud that after several people complained they finally turned it off it took 20 minuets to get my change and they acted confused about that too I will give it another chance after they get it a bit more figured out bur not for a few months
(2)Melissa R.
I don't normally complain but the service was terrible, slow and inconsiderate. Food wasn't anything special. Not recommending, but if you don't try, you never know.
(1)Kate P.
Get the tacos. Pass on the fijitas. The tacos are around $2 a piece, all kinds of filling choices...you won't be disappointed! This place gets three stars because of service (waitress never noticed our glasses were always empty and we had to keep asking for refills) and atmosphere--lots of weird people there staring when we were there... The tacos are good though...mmmm.
(3)Travis F.
I can't get enough of the food at los ocampo's!! Every thing I try is better than the last. The Taco's a very simple menu item that all other mexican restaurants seem to mess up are fantastic! The tortas will satisfy any one's hunger. On top of their great mexican food they win big with there wings, which I was not expecting at all!! the wings with their homemade arbol sauce is unbelievable. Last but not least great tap beer's and the list of Tequilas available make's the experience that much better. Thank you los ocampo for adding a great addition to the east side.
(5)Johnee B.
Green HOT sauce helps out on everthing. Hamburger? Needs shredded beef on menu. Pretty good Chili Rellenos, hard to find good ones in the Twin Cites.
(4)Christina A.
I prefer their other locations, but it is nice to have this closer to my house. The food is excellent, reminds me of Mexico City. Get the Huarachazo - you won't be sorry. This is also a great place to take the kids!
(5)Diana E.
I don't know, this wasn't as great as I was expecting. I had the fish sandwich, the fish was very thin and the bun and cabbage were overwhelming. Would have liked more fish and less "extras". Service was a bit slow also, but the server was very friendly.
(2)Jenny C.
My family loves this place for Mexican food and always go there often. I am not much into Mexcian food unless I am craving for it. So, I thought I would give it a try with a friend of mine. It has a nice setting and atmosphere. The place was bigger than I expected. The waitress was really nice and friendly and helpful when I had questions about the menu. The food was great and flavorful and the cocktail drinks were too. It was a little bit more expensive than the average local Mexican Restaurant according to my friend. The parking lot is nice and spacious so that was good too. I live very close by so whenever I am craving for Mexican foods I tend to go there. I would recommend this place for others also to try.
(4)Jessica N.
Loved this place! The food was delicious and I will for sure be returning back. The service was great and everyone was very friendly and nice.
(5)Mark D.
I grew up and spent most of my life in Southern California and in the Southwest and I vacation in Mexico often so I knew great Mexican food, sadly this is not it. The food and prices are ok, the service is hit and miss. I was very disappointed that they started charging for chips and salsa. If midwest Mexican food is all you know than you probably won't mind this place. But if you have traveled or are from the Pacific Southwest or even Texas, you'll be disappointed. This place could benefit by an education experienced restaurant manger and one who is "hip" and knows how to bring in the crowds.
(2)Steve T.
We had a great meal here today. I was very happy with the tacos I ordered, one with their smoked pork and one with the beef barbacoa. The pork had a ton of flavor - almost over the top. The beef was delicious. My wife ordered the huarchazo, which was terrific with the carnitas. Moist, flavorful meat with some delicious toppings, and the corn masa cake underneath was just a little crispy and not greasy. The kids meals were tasty, but they were probably a little too tasty for my kids. Other parents may sympathize...or roll their eyes. You pick. I had a glass of Horchata with my meal. I thought it was delicious, but I don't have a wide experience to compare it to. The environment is well lit, open, and friendly. The prices were reasonable and the portions were good. Some items (like the tortas and burritos) were very large. The chips and salsa were more interesting than the average mexican restaurant, and the queso dip had a generous sprinkling of tomatoes and herbs on top. I was a fan of that.

After reviewing Teresa's, I felt the strong need to post a review of a similar style of restaurant that offers the customer a far better dining experience. Los Ocampo was a real surprise to me as I was not expecting much at all. But they provided a great meal at an affordable price... And for someone who is picky about Mexican food, that's a win. Similar to Teresa's, Los Ocampo is in a building formerly occupied by a chain restaurant. In this case, Los Ocampo used to be a Baker's Square off of 94 and White Bear. There is nothing about the exterior that screams "yummy Mexican food." Once I was seated, my opinion began to change. The server was one of the friendliest that Ive had in the past few years--anywhere. She was very kind, smiley, and attentive. The menu was what you might expect from a Mexican place of this level, but the prices seemed good. I ordered a tamale platter which was outstanding. I have a big appetite but I could barely finish my food. It came with rice, beans, chips, salsa, 2 tamales, and a beverage. I believe all of that cost me around $7.50, but Id have to check to be certain--I just recall thinking what a great value it was. You might not expect to get delicious Mexican food in an old Baker's Square, but I dont think any fan of Mexican food would be greatly disappointed in their experience here. Id recommend dining here for an affordable lunch. Pros: Good location right off of 94, great value, friendly people, wide variety of beverages, very tasty tamales, big portions Cons: It's in an old Baker's Square... And it feels like it, not high-end Mexican (although still very tasty)
(4)Jess R.
I've had a few things here and they were all phenomenal. The queso y chorizo is a great appetizer to start with. Their beer is big and fresh. The enchiladas are always delicious. The alambres (sabores) are to die for and can feed a family of four, or at least give you a few meals out of it! The fish tacos are delicious, they're made fresh in house and even the tortillas are made from scratch.
(4)Dinesh S.
Great place and i like the arrangement. Staff was very humble nd aervice was awesome. Food was great and tasty. If you like spicy food, dont forget to ask for Hot Green Salsa. This ia very hot but very tasty.

PEOPLE OF NORTH ST. PAUL, MAPLEWOOD, OAKDALE, WOODBURY and surrounding areas. This is the best Mexican food that you will ever hope to have. Forget the crap they serve at Guadala-Jose-capulco-wherever. They have a bar, they have drink specials, they serve margaritas, they will even make you a lettuce and cheese ground beef soft taco if you ask for it (I don't even know why you would), but they have AUTHENTIC Mexican food as well, and it is TASTY. When you order a quesadilla, taco or burrito here, you have to have an open mind. It will not be like what you know from Taco John's, but in my opinion, it is much, much, much better. Whenever I have a work day or a Staff Development day, I hop on I-94, exit White Bear Ave and am transported to Mexico Lindo. Now if only I could convince my co-workers that this is the place we should have happy hour. I always get the Tacos Al Pastor, the Tongue Taco and the Carnitas Tacos. The Carnitas are the best I've had outside of Mexico. I am a regular at the Mpls based Taqueria, but the restaurant is awesome because they will give you free chips and salsa. Yay!

I think I gave this place 4 stars first time around. In fact, their food and service are solid. I knocked a star off because of their advertising. Normally I'm not one to nitpick, however last night ticked me off a bit. You walk in and there is a large sign on their front door that says "Happy Hour Every Day!" and goes on to list times and options. Cool, $3 off drinks! We order a round, eat some amazing appetizers- their guac is so good, as is their creamy and spicy green sauce. Mini tostadas are excellent too. Love the potato wedges with chorizo queso also. Anyhow, we then order another round and I decide to switch from a margarita to tap beer. Love Dos XX and Modelo Negro. Our excellent waitress asks what size and I replied "whatever's on happy hour." She says "there's no happy hour on Saturday or Sunday". Miffed, I point to the sign (we were sitting next to the window that looks directly at the front door) and say "your sign says happy hour every day....?" She says, "well, it's wrong". The four us us would have saved $30! Again, I'm not a bargain shopper or quibbler, but hey, 30 bucks is 30 bucks! Anyhow, that aside the food was great. I had a huarachazo(sp) and it was great. My wife had pan fried walleye with garlic sauce. She loved it. Others had nachos and various incantations of tacos. The place is so clean, the servers are dressed neatly and it's a neat place to enjoy excellent Mexican food.

This a story about how the best lunch in the last year, turned into the worst. My wife and I had a Living Social coupon for $30 at Los Ocampo, so we asked some friends if they would like to join us, they agreed. We arrived at the old Baker's Square building and it was pretty empty, I walked by the bar and noticed Pacifico on tap, as well a Modelo. Score! Our waitress came by, and I ordered a big Pacifico on tap. After 5 minutes, I finally got it. This was the start of one of the worst waitress/service experiences I have ever had. Our friends arrived and he ordered a big Pacifico,it took 10 minutes to get his beer, I had to remind our waitress that he ordered a beer. Dear Lord. But WAIT, there is more. I ordered the Torta Cubano, oh my gosh, one of the best tasting sandwiches ever, so many meats, you can't even count. The weird thing was that the menu said all the meats that came on it, and our waitress asked us what kind of meat we wanted? "Umm....Mexican chicken I guess" Even though it says it comes with steak and chorizo. It was like Bizarro world. They asked my friend the same thing, but Hawaiin style, and he was like. "Ummm...Mexican chicken I guess" even though it said the meats on the menu. We all looked at each other like "What"? Then she asked, we only have breaded chicken, do you want that? "Um...No. Grilled please." It was like Mexican restaurant hell. Finally a competent waitress came by to make sure our order was correct, she was great. Here is a great idea, hire people that actually know your menu. Another, Dear Lord moment. My wife ordered a bunch of sides to make her own tacos; beans, salad, rice. They looked spectacular. My other friend got this huge bowl of chicken soup that looked amazing. It also came with 2 fantastic looking tostadas. It was like heaven in a bowl. It was seriously huge! At least 2 meals worth. Then the fun began. They said our coupon had already been used. Well, we have never been here, so there must have been a mistake,so we asked to see the manager. She insisted that they check IDs and she brought out roster with our name highlighted that it had already been used. "Well, we have never been here,so there is a mistake" We noticed the person below was also named Jason, so they highlighted the wrong name. She was like, "We will take take $15 off" Well make it $30 and we are good. Yes, they thought we were trying to use our coupon twice. Now, it is almost impossible to piss me off, but I was now officially mad. You were accusing the most honest people on earth of trying to cheat a restaurant. That is unacceptable. We waited at least 15 minutes for them to fix our bill, finally we left our table with cash on the table with a way too big tip for the service we got. Our company was 5 stars, the food was 5 stars, and they would have got 5 stars if they didn't treat us like criminals. Bad idea for the manager. The customer is always right. Ever hear of it?

Nice enough place. Very full and feeling extra lazy after eating here. Like what they've done to the Bakers Square. It's nice and open and the tables are spaced out nicely and not right on top of each other. Food is very filling and pretty good. I ordered the lunch gordita with all rice, no beans which was very good. The rice was done just the way I like it. Fluffy and moist. The gordita shell was a tad greasy, but still good and went well with the skirt steak inside. J ordered the burrito los ocampo with chicken which was pretty good size. First round of chips is complimentary, second round is 2.99. Salsa is ok, the green super hot is very good. Great service and fast. We'll be back to try out some more on their menu which has a pretty good selection.

Best authentic Mexican restaurant in the Twin Cities. Delicioso!

I was so hapy to see another Los Ocampo open up as a sit down full restaurant, as I eat at the other location in the global market often. My husband and I went for lunch and had a great experience. It was not super busy and our server was very good. The food was great and the atmosphere was very nice. Will be back!

I went here for my birthday dinner. I LOVE authentic carne asada tacos....I did not love these! Tasteless, dry meat. If you want anything extra, like Mexican cheese, (which turned out to be nothing more than parmesan...which isn't Mexican), you have to pay extra. I did order a green chicken tamale, which was fantastic! As I was eating my tamale, I look to my left and see a family with two young children, one of which was vomiting like the exorcist! I know that isn't the fault of the restaurant, but still, I was done eating at the sight of that! I would not recommend the tacos,.as I visited one week later just to be sure, and they were even more horrible than the birthday visit! I will go back for the tamales, and maybe I will find something else on the menu worth eating. Definitely not the tacos though, ever again! Also, I agree with another reviewer, when they say that the other locations are better! The one on arcade is great, although the prices for combos are a little high. Unfortunately, they do not have the yummy tamales. :-(

We live nearby and decided to check it out, since it is new to the neighborhood. Like a prior reviewer said, the closed-down Baker's Square was an eyesore and it is nice to have a restaurant up and running again in that location. We liked the decor inside and thought they did a great job giving the inside a major facelift. The food was great. My husband had a seafood soup (can't remember the name) and really loved it. He said they cooked all the shrimp, mussels, scallops and octopus perfectly, which is hard to do correctly. I had the enchiladas rancheras and was very happy with it. Great portion sizes and prices. My husband ate a lot of the soup and still has a full serving to eat for lunch tomorrow. We will definitely be going back and taking advantage of their take-out menu!

Awesome food. Had the chimichanga burrito and it was about the size of my head...and it tasted great. The service was good and the atmosphere was fine. Definitely will be going back.
